It is a pleasant town to wander round. We are not beach people, as we prefer mountains. It's a good centre for reaching the various routes that are advertised., like the raisin route and the mudejar route.
Velez Malaga is not too touristy.
It is not an easy place to find your way around by car.

Smallish town 30 min away from Malaga, great place to stay if you prefer real communities to the tourist farms on the seaside. Well-kept tipical Andalucian historic buildings, good shops, OK restaurants. 10 min away from the beaches, accessible with even public transport. Center of tropical coast: awesome local mango, chirimoya, avocado in season!

You need a car to get there.
You need a car to get there. Cost of parking is 10 Euro/day so for one week was 70 Euro. It was 30 km from coast and if you get off the main roads, can be very difficult driving in the very narrow and hilly laneways.
GPS often directed us to one way streets in the wrong direction.

Not a tourist hot spot and won't be to everyone's taste.
Not a tourist hot spot and won't be to everyone's taste. Old quarter is delightful but newer part of town lacks character with little choice in hotels. A few nice places to eat and good value for money. We like El Convento and La Pena. Be prepared for some uphill walking in old town. Some nice places to visit like Casa Cervantes and the Church and Gardens of Our Lady of the Remedies. The best thing about our visit was the fabulous place we stayed, La casa de las Titas. Can't rate it highly enough!

Transport is easy and available to the wider region, this is not a picture box white Pueblo this is an authentic Andalucian town with great restaurants and hotels giving easy access to the beaches and the coast, or to the picturesque villages further up the hills and mountains.
We had a great 3 night stay at Casa Bambu. Miriam & Stephan were super friendly, Stephan communicating with us by WhatsApp to arrange check-in and breakfast and serving us of the best breakfasts we've had in ages. The room was well equipped for a self-catering stay and the views from the room, patio and pool area are amazing, even when the sun doesn't shine! They have an honesty bar for drinks which was reasonably priced and the hotel was immaculately clean. We loved the rural location and it was really quiet at night.
A complete gem of a hotel.
Tastefully designed and decorated in keeping with the Spanish style. Beautifully appointed rooms with spacious relaxing area and very comfortable beds.
We were welcomed by the wonderful Maria who called us in advance to arrange parking and kindly offered to book a restaurant on our behalf.
The pool area on the roof and terraces were so welcome, as was the honesty bar which had everything g from cavas to beers and soft drinks.
A very special place and we will most certainly be back.
In a beautiful location in the hills behind Malaga. Beautiful scenery with view over the coast and Velez-Malaga. Great swimming pool with nice breeze in the afternoon. Honesty box bar with soft drinks. Rooms beautifully appointed in old Spanish style. Staff very helpful and friendly. Good range of food and drinks at breakfast. Lunch and dinner menus extensive. Large size portions & beautifully cooked. We have very much enjoyed our stay here. Exceptional hotel.
So tranquil, in a very special rustic mountain setting! The hosts, Annette and Dirk, are wonderful and very welcoming. Visiting with them and their adorable friendly dog Mitch was an unexpected highlight of my trip! And when I encountered a problem with my rental car in a nearby town, Dirk was very kind to give me a ride in order to meet the tow truck.
Host, Maria, was exceptional - she was attentive to our needs and had many wonderful suggestions for our adventure! I had the privilege of having coffee with her in the morning - she is a beautiful soul ❤️ Wish we could have spent more time there. I would definitely recommend Hotel Palacio to all!
Great location in the center of an old town. Beautifully designed charming boutique hotel. Most importantly, excellent service! Maria - the hotel manager is the most caring and helpful person you can ever imagine. Cecilia kept our room in perfect and clean condition.
We enjoyed our stay a lot.
It is a beautiful small hotel with a swimming pool. The room was pretty little but the balcony was great! Sitting on the balcony we could enjoy the view of the mountains.
Beautiful views. Calm and peaceful. Very welcoming hosts. The room was very clean and practical.
Keep in mind it's the countryside and that there are no shops nearby.
