The Moorish Watchtower
Almería lies on the Mediterranean coast of Andalusía, overlooked by the old Moorish citadel or ‘Alcazaba’. It offers sandy beaches, rocky coves, clear waters, and the typical friendliness of southern Spain. Its urban pattern blends Moorish legacy, medieval buildings, modern architecture, and colourful narrow streets.
It was founded in the mid-10th century by the Caliph of Cordoba, and was named ‘Al-Mariy-yat’ or ‘the watchtower’, as it was part of the coastal defences of the Caliphate. After internal divisions in the Caliphate and Christian crusades, the city finally surrendered to the Catholic monarchs a few years before the first trip of Columbus. A range of hotels in Almeria’s city centre will allow you to enjoy this magic atmosphere from a close distance.
The Cathedral of St Mary of the Incarnation was originally a mosque, and was built resembling a fortress, in order to offer resistance to pirates. The nearby Gata-Nijar Cape Natural Park offers beautiful landscapes and beaches. Hotels on Almeria’s beaches are a popular choice, while a variety of accommodation is also available in the surrounding villages of Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, and San José.
The city is serviced by Almería Airport, a local railway station, and a bus station. Ferry services to Tunis and the Spanish enclave of Melilla are also available.

Almeria is a beautiful coastal town with a long history as a trading port on the Mediterranean. Since it is a bit outside the typical tourist destinations it is less swamped by "hordes' of visitors. Numerous sights in town and countryside to explore, e.g. castle, cathedral, promenades, parks, markets, etc. It is surrounded by the only "real" desert in Europe!

Almeria is a little unknown Spanish city. Small but it does offer an amazing foodie experience. Good weather all year around... And tapas come for free with your drink! Apart from that, the beaches are amazing. Virgin wild beaches and coved that you can only access on foot.

The people are very nice and welcoming. If you look for a place in a city which is still not too crowded the autumn in Almería is perfect! It is necessary that you have a bike or even a car to get around.

A beautiful city… very walkable and pedestrian friendly with beautiful squares and benches everywhere. Terrific restaurants on every corner providing great value if you stick to the drink+ free tapa system. Very little English spoken… mostly Spanish tourists so that might be a slight disadvantage if you don’t speak the language. The people are exceptionally friendly and accommodating. I can’t wait for my next- much longer- visit!!!CarmelIreland

The fixtures and fittings were of quality, and being an interior designer, I appreciate the work! The location is great to get around all of Almeria on foot, we stayed 8 days. The unit has a remote entry system that the owner supplies info on prior to arrival. He is also very responsive via WhatsApp for questions and restaurant recommendations. If your travel brings you to Almeria, don’t hesitate to book here, you won’t be sorry.

Internet connection was very fast and stable, there were also around 6 electrical contacts. The location of this place is also very nice, nearby are two grocery shops and a beautiful park. Our room in Centro was very good, great bathroom, comfortable beds good lighting and a fridge, which must be a great bonus in the warmer months. Breakfast was very good and included a now rare orange juicing machine! We were here in winter and our room was warm. Locations is also excellent for bars, restaurants and shopping. Also ask locals where to try an 'Americano' drink.
