Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.
Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.
The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!
We loved Merida! There is so much amazing history and it is all very easily accessible by walking. The city’s 17 euro ticket also makes it amazing value. The city is also quaint with cobbled stones, and it is a more genuinely Spanish experience, where most people don’t speak English and costa are more reasonable. I paid 1 euro for a takeaway coffee!

Probably one of the best antiquities museums in Spain.
Probably one of the best antiquities museums in Spain. There is much to see in this city including a Roman bridge, the alcazar, the Temple of Diana and especially the amphitheater and arena. The crowning glory is the museum as well as a Roman house.

The city is very walkable especially along the river and aqueducts. If interested in history the city has done an excellent job at showcasing its Roman history including a wonderful Museum. The city is a living "open air" museum. A combined ticket for multiple sites in 16Euros/8Euros for Seniors. We visited 7 sites.

Merida was a mecca for Roman history.
Merida was a mecca for Roman history. The museum was particularly beautiful with carefully selected pieces on display. It was easy to walk to all the major sites. We loved a gourmet supermarket opposite the museum and the first eatery in front of it. We took the tourist train at the last minute and it was a great way to get a feel for Merida and the location of all the sites.

A pretty, nice town.
A pretty, nice town. I liked the Roman bridge, the river, the sidewalk along the river, the Roman Theatre, amphitheatre, the Iberian bellota ham and pork. I had some good Iberian pork dishes, such as pluma, carrillada... So tasty! People are very friendly!

Merida has so many great archeological and cultural sites to explore. Thanfully they are all packed within walkable distances.
A day would not be enough unless you have the stamina. But it can be done.
The room was spacious, clean and functional, but a bit dark towards an inner courtyard which on the other hand made it quiet during the night. The strict rules of the restaurant and bar (that did not have the cocktails they offer in their menu) rather reminded us more of a youth hostel then a hotel of this category, unfortunately due to a family emergency we could not check wether it was thus in all paradores or just the one in Merida. The parador is right in the city with all sights in easy walking distance
Everything ! Location, facilities and staff. Location is top ! The apartment is also top ! It is big, clean and comfortable. It has everything we need. On top of that, Noelia, the staff there, went beyond our expectations to accommodate our needs. She allowed for a late checkout which really helped us. All in all this apartment made us feel like home. It's the best accomodation we had during our 4 weeks trip in Spain and Portugal. Thank you !
The reception staff, especially Isabel, were extraordinarily kind and helpful. The breakfast room staff welcomed us at the very last minute after we overslept. The public spaces are generous and comfy, and the bar was a nice refuge. The location gives easy access both to the historic sites and to the pleasant, real-life city and its pedestrian streets and shops. Merida is good for tourists, but they don't own the place.
The apartment was exceptional. High ceilings, very spacious rooms, everything you need in the kitchen. We were extremely satisfied with the level of cleanliness, as well as with the location. The hotel is located just a few steps away from Merida's main tourist attractions, but we were enjoying uninterrupted sleep on very comfortable bed (Good quality of bedding should also be noted).
The property was lovely! Extremely clean, excellent location, and very accommodating host. Check-in was a breeze and the parking was very convenient. The host had excellent recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing, helping us make the best of our stay in Mérida. We really enjoyed visiting the city and could not have asked for a better place to stay.
Excellent location, beautiful hotel with comfortable, spacious rooms and a kind and helpful staff. A nice brunch offering good variety. Easy to unload luggage at the front of the hotel. Right on the plaza with several small bars and restaurants. Convenient for walkers who want to explore the city and attractions.
The property is so beautiful and super well located! We had a huge patio and a private hot tub which was so welcome and appreciated after a month of bike riding. The bed was super comfortable and our room was super clean and spacious. The staff was so nice. We highly recommend this hotel!
Breakfast (Desayuno) consisted of toast, fresh squeezed orange juice, and coffee. It was good, inexpensive (6 Euro per person), but minimal.
Hotel was wonderfully decorated with movie scenes on all the walls. We purposely took the stairs to enjoy all the Disney characters.
The location was great for sightseeing, souvenir shopping and dining. The hotel was clean and conveyed a pleasant atmosphere. Our room was quiet so we had no problems sleeping. The staff were courteous and friendly.
Conveniently located near several Roman ruins. The gentleman at the Reception was very kind, courteous and attentive. He made us feel very welcome from the time we arrived to the time we left the hotel.
Excellent price, very convenient location (near the train station) in a very walkable town, very friendly staff, and cheerful room. A very good option for budget travelers in Merida.
This is a premium hotel right in the very centre of Merida. The staff are very nice and welcoming, there's a valet parking, our junior suite was very spacious and well-appointed.
This is an excellent hotel to stay at in Mérida. Central location, really helpful staff, excellent clean room. I would stay again. Oh and the movie themes are really great.
Most convenient stop when travelling on route A66. Quality hotel with good rooms great beds and bathroom facilities. Staff in the coffee shop very helpful.
