Durango is a lovely place to experience the Basque way of life. It is not particularly a tourist destination as such, but for me that is the appeal. Not many people speak English, but they will go out of their way to be helpful. That said, it would not do any harm to learn a few basic words and phrases of Spanish, or Basque if you are brave.
Durango is surrounded by mountains, which are nothing short of spectacular to see. Take a bus, or train ride to Bilbao (Bilbo to the locals)(cost €2.55), or San Sebastian (Donostia) to see some beautiful scenery. Lekeitio is a lovely seaside resort not so far from Durango with not a roast beef dinner in sight. Speaking of which, do not expect the type of dining experience you would get in Ireland or Britain. The basques like to wander from bar to bar, having only one or two drinks and/or snacks in each place. Measures of beer tend to be small. This is to ensure that they stay cold until you are finished them. Moving from place to place normally means that everyone gets to meet all their friends when they are out. Also, this activity rarely starts before 22:00 or later and can continue well into the early hours.
In summary, I love the place and I'm very happy to recommend it.

We stayed outside the town centre in a lovely village called Garai. The town of Durango was a little disappointing as most restaurants where tapas bar not restaurants. Nice atmosphere in the evening though. Unfortunatly the 3 restaurants in the village we stayed were closed in the evening

Wonderful town, such character, young and classy at the same time. We ate at the hotel Olajauregi which was wonderful and had drinks in their garden. The old town offers plenty of restaurants and bars, very vibrant.
Hotel ocamino had a good position in a modern block directly linked to a great bar/restaurant just a short 10 minute walk from the historic centre with all its bars and shops. On street parking was not difficult to find. The room was nice and clean with a good shower. It had electric black out shutters and window. The towels where changed every day of my day,
Kind, helpful, informative people and a home-like setting. The owner's were so kind, and offered great suggestions for the area. You're literally less than 5 minutes away from Durango. Breakfast was made to order and wonderful! Really felt like you were staying with family. The bed was comfortable. This was a great value for the money!
Beautiful property tucked away behind Durango. The owner was super friendly, accommodating and made a great breakfast ☺️ The property was well situated between Urkiola and Durango. Kitchen fully stocked with utensils (including wine glasses). It was a lovely place to cook and sit by the fire after our hike.
The staff were so very helpful - rescued us from a horrible hotel we were stuck in, sent a taxi and made everything about our stay just lovely. The building was incredibly grand and historic, the pool beautiful and the spa changing rooms very handy for an extra swim before we had to catch a flight.

Friendly and helpful staff, we left the hotel very early in the morning, they prepared a take-away breakfast for us.
Clean rooms, 10 minute walk to Town Centre. Hotel provided good, safe cycle parking.
Durango was a plansantly busy town, lots of bars. Nice restaurant in town centre for dinner.
