Surrounded by the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Spanish town of Peñíscola is a fortified seaport in the Castellón province. This attractive destination is a well-liked tourist resort thanks to its unique position on a rock and the gorgeous beaches.
Home to an iconic lighthouse and an impressive old town, the historic medieval city of Peñíscola will amaze you with its unique beauty and variety of outdoor activities. Apart from historical sites, it features wonderful beaches like Basseta Beach, the pebbled Argilaga Cove and the sandy Norte Beach.
Situated on the highest point of the city, the Castle used to be the residence of Pope Benedict XIII. The filming location of the epic movie ‘El Cid’, Peñíscola is about 145 km from the city of Valencia. The fort has three different entrances, built during different periods from the 15th-century until 1754.
Travellers can walk along the promenade area, wander around the green botanic park with the palm trees or visit a restaurant to savour local fish stew and shellfish. The old town is great for spending a few days in - Book one of the top two rooms at Dios Esta Bien B&B as then you have a great place in the old town from which to explore with great food & hosts, as well as being able to get away from the crowds by retreating to your own private terrace which then gives you access to the roof terrace. The hostel does not have a lift, but on the plus side, it avoids walking up and down the hill if you are not staying in the old town. The rest of Peñíscola is a big and well laid out resort - We were fortunate to be there just before Easter when it was quieter, but it does get very busy during the holiday season, so pick your time if only spending a few days here. The food and drinks at the B&B are very good and we can highly recommend the restaurant La Taverneta de Sant Roc just down the same street - their T-bone steak was amazing and they were charming hosts. Personally, the whole resort is a bit too big for us when considering a holiday, but everyone should visit and spend a few days in the old town - it’s got a real buzz and vibe about it, and best time to go would be before and after main summer holiday season unless you like crowds

I most liked visiting the castle and the old town surrounding the castle. This is well worth a visit. The town has great beaches, but there are many shops and restaurants closed during the wintertime.

Absolute waste of money.
Absolute waste of money. Run down accommodation, no parking g in town, very touristy, and full of people with selfie sticks. The castle although huge has nothing specifically interesting except the views.

definitely a place worth a visit, the old town and castle...
definitely a place worth a visit, the old town and castle are a must (probably not good if you have mobility issues). We visited in December and the town was decorated for Christmas, really nice (and busy). we stayed for 3 nights but used Peniscola as a base to visit Morella. We think 2 days is more than enough if you don't want the beach, however if it is the beach you want then Pensicola is perfect.
There are a multitude of restaurants to choose from and seafood is a speciality.
Loved it.

Peñiscola is a stunning seaside town in the northern tip of the Valencian Community, famous for its medieval castle and its rich history. Whether you are looking for a relaxing beach holiday, a cultural adventure, or a musical feast, Peñiscola has something for everyone.
You can explore the impressive fortress of Peñiscola Castle, walking in the very steps of many generations before. You can also enjoy the views of the Mediterranean from the lighthouse and the Museum of the Sea. If you are a nature lover, you can hike or bike in the Sierra de Irta nature reserve.
Peñiscola also hosts two music festivals every summer: the International Festival of Ancient and Baroque Music and the International Jazz Festival of Peñiscola. You can listen to some of the best musicians from around the world in a unique, very pleasant setting.
Peñiscola is a gem of the Costa del Azahar, a place where history, culture, and nature blend together in harmony. Don't miss this opportunity to visit one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. 100% recommended.

We visited the castle, and surrounding area the first...
We visited the castle, and surrounding area the first afternoon. Lots of souvenir shops we avoided.
The rest of the time we were at the beach and walking,
There was supposedly a festival but didn't really see any evidence of it each time we walked around the town, except the big bike ride I saw from our balcony. We did go to the Information center but were only given the book and a useless map of castle area. No 'real' city map so we didn't know where the locations were that had events. Booths were empty each time we went to old town.
I had wished there was something to do in the evenings (not bar scene) culturally.
Mostly we were there for the beach. It was wonderful. We are from California and miss it after living in Spain 10 months. A day away from the area would have been good but we hadn't planned on it.
Good restaurants but very hard to find non seafood for hubby. (as expected).
Our room was spotless, the mattress was very comfortable and the view was stupendous. In the heart of the old town you are surrounded by bars and restaurants and in the evenings, especially, the atmosphere is quite magical. The church bell opposite tolls during the day but doesn't start until 8am. The family who own the hotel couldn't Have been kinder and we enjoyed the fixed price lunch. We had a small but cute balcony and really enjoyed our stay.
Perfect location in more quite part of Peniscola, yet still close to the centre (30 min walk), next to to beach. You have everything you need around. Although hotel does not have it’s own parking places you can find it close to it - either private parking or just on the street (recomend to pay via app).
Staff is very helpful and friendly, deliscious breakfest and restaurant dishes.
Room was spacious with excelent view on the see and promenade.
A generous sized room with a comfortable bed. It was good to be able to book car parking on site behind a security barrier. The location of the hotel was very good, being on the sea front. The restaurant was closed during our stay but we had an excellent evening meal at a small family restaurant just a short walk towards the town at Casa Pepe. We would be happy to stay here again.
This is a great value set of apartments with nice grounds and two pools, one heated and one not. It has a large outdoor terrace area and the main living area is also large with table, chairs, good kitchen and TV including BBC! Table tennis available and large supermarket just next door. Easy to get bus into main part of Benicarlo or Peniscola.
It was a beautiful hotel…lots of flowers, beautifully kept…nice pool area with seating area in the shade and an outdoor bar out there also. There was much attention to detail in the whole place. .kind of rustic and we loved it!
Many restaurants within walking distance and the beach was right across the road.
There are plenty of places to stay in Peniscola with a sea view but this one takes some beating. Nice big room and once you open those double doors on the 2 balconies you have it all.
There is a fridge and a kettle in the room. Tea and coffee but no milk sachets. Lots of places to eat and drink.
Lovely small boutique hotel close to the castle, beach, shops and restaurants. As we were there in low season we were able to park for free in front of the hotel.
The bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept in.
The decor was lovely, blues and white in keeping with being close to the sea.
Wonderful breakfast between 8.00 and 10.00. My son was in a Triathlon in Peniscola on Sunday and the staff provided a prepared breakfast which was generous of the hotel which he could have in our room at 5.30a.m. The dinners were great, self service buffet.
Location is superb: beach is across the street, centre of Peniscola is well within walking distance.
As the hotel (apparently) has been recently renovated, all is practically brand new. Bathroom is very modern with walk-in shower etc. Beautifull.
Great bedrooms, fantastic service, tremendous breakfast. Location was perfect for us but a long walk into Peniscola centre for some. Hotel has some lovely facilities and we had a really enjoyable stay, thank you.
Great location with parking just behind the hotel itself. Rooms offer good value, clean with efficient air conditioning- good breakfast buffet and all in all excellent value
Very good location right at the beach. Pool and restaurant accessible for hotel clients. Great value for money: a very good option close to Peniscola center.
Lovely hotel in an amazing location, we were made very welcome by Alicia and family who are the perfect host.
We will definitely be back for another visit.
