Historic Port of Walls
Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

Over night stop before cruising . Use of spa at hotel made it feel like the holiday began early . Ate at tapas restaurant £200 4 adults . Very enjoyable . Town centre easy to each from hotels . Great parking , dining options for every budget

We went to Southampton to go to the Mayflower theatre which is good value compared to London theatres. It has lots of shows and good facilities. We will go back. We also had a good dinner at Papillon which is opposite the theatre. We stayed at the Ibis which is good value and well located for the Mayflower.

We stayed in 003. Very spacious but this is what facilities I should have had. The spacious family room features a tea and coffee maker and a seating area, as well as a private bathroom boasting a bath. The well-equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, kitchenware, a microwave and a toaster. This family room features a sofa, heating and a flat-screen TV. The unit has 2 beds. All we got was the tea & coffee making facilities. Table in there but nothing else. Rooms spacious but found lounge & beds very uncomfortable. Thankfully only stayed the one night. Quiet & grounds lovely.

The town centre has loads of shops and a large indoor shopping centre. There are several parks and lots of green space available. There was a huge choice of cafes, restaurants and pubs for all price brackets. We went to the 1865 club which holds lots of musical events. We were a bit concerned doing the 30 minute walk through the parks when the event finnished, however we saw at least 3 separate groups of police walking around the town and parks so felt very safe.PatriciaUnited Kingdom

Breakfast was included in the price and the choice of food was very good. The hotel is very close to the Westquay Centre where there is a great choice of shops and restaurants. The hotel is close to the Cruise Terminal. While the Cruise Terminal may look close I suggest you take a taxi which the Hotel Concierge arranged for us. Great location, walkable around the old city with its interesting past, its many still-intact walls, and Titanic history. Joe was very personable, and we enjoyed some interesting chats together. We appreciated the morning coffee, cereal and toast before starting our day. Would definitely stay again at Joe's place if we are ever back in Southampton!DianaUnited States

Our room overlooked a noisy McDonalds open 24/7, so a lot of noise through the night, which I know is not the Hotel's fault. Parking our car at hotel was £10 a night on top of room rate was quite fair. Breakfast could be a bit more hygienic, cheap ham and cheese just left lying out, nothing covered at all, so went elsewhere.AnthonyJersey

The room was beautiful and they accommodated my mobility issues by putting me on the first floor. Perfectly located 5-10 min walk to a major shopping outlet and 5 min walk to the waterfront.
